News Items
Milne Bay Hospital
The Alotau General Hospital has purchased six houses. One of the houses will
be used to house the Chief Executive Officer.
Bougainville
A trade show will be held on Bougainville next month hosted by BOC Gas PNG
and CIG Australia in partnership with the Arawa Research Training Centre (ARTC).
It is hoped that ARTC will be able to become a technical institution affiliated
with the PNG Apprenticeship Board in the future. ARTC has been running since
opening in 1996.
Bougainville Govt
The Bougainville Government has made a decision to move the provincial headquarters
back to Arawa from Buka. Arawa is extremely run down and many things would
need to be done before the civil service could be moved back there. The process
would not be able to happen overnight and it is thought that it would have
to be carried out in phases if it was to succeed. Businesses are unsure whether
to move as they say their safety could not be guaranteed at the former provincial
centre.
Mt Hagen Show
Over 600 visitors from overseas made it to the 42nd Mt Hagen Cultural Show.
The show was pronounced as being one of the most diverse spectacular cultural
displays in the world. Sixty cultural groups took part in the show held recently.
Goroka Show
The Goroka Show is set for the weekend just before Independence Day. It will
be held from the 12th to the 14th of September. Independence Day is the 16th
of September. PNG gained independence from Australia on the 16th of September
1975.
Anglicare StopAIDS
The Anglicare StopAIDS group has had a groundbreaking ceremony for a new
building to be located on the corner of Waigani Drive and Koura Way (turn
off to Tokarara). The new building, scheduled to be completed before the end
of the year, will cost about K1.5 million.
Increased Taxes
It looks as if the wage earners of PNG are gong to be hit with more increases
in the many various taxes already imposed in the country. It has been tipped
that the sales and services tax (VAT) will be increased from the current 10
percent to 15 percent. Due to the failing economy the government has borrowed
K300 million domestically to prop up the shortfall caused by the fact that
money from the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank have not been released.
Aid Criticism
Former Prime Minister Sir Mekere has said that Sir Michael Somare's criticism
on Australian aid as childish. Sir Mekere said that "The Prime Minister
and his government appear very distraught and are acting like children throwing
tantrums. They are letting their personal feelings overcome their responsibilities
as leaders". Sir Mekere warned that PNG would not survive without Australian
aid, which accounts for 25 percent of the revenue and grants in the national
budget and also represents 66 per cent of its development budget. Many people
inside Australia say that the aid would be better used in Australia.
Siam Weed
"Chromolaena" or Siam weed (Chromolaena odorata) is considered
to be one of the world's worst weeds and it has been in parts of PNG since
the early 1970's possibly earlier. Some other common names of the weed are
-- Christmas bush, trifid weed, paraffin weed. bitter bush and Jack in the
bush. To date, the Chromolaena is found in 11 provinces, mostly in the coastal
lowland areas. It is now present in West Sepik, Madang, Morobe, East and West
New Britain, Milne Bay and Manus provinces. And in areas where there is no

Horse Racing Machines
The horse racing gaming machines, seen in many take away food outlets and
even homes, have now been banned from PNG. The machines have been blamed for
many school students not attending classes. The move has been called for by
parents, eminent citizens and senior members of the community at large. The
only type of gaming machines allowed in PNG now are poker machines.
Drug Smuggling
The smuggling of marijuana along the Highlands Highway has increased with
police reporting a higher frequency of detection at roadblocks along the highway.
Diving Death
A 75-year-old woman has failed to return to a dive boat in Milne Bay. The
lady, from Canada, was an experienced diver with over 3000 certified dives
to her credit. This was her fifth diving trip to PNG and she had dived in
Milne Bay previously.
Engineers' Certificates
A scam has been detected where officers of the Department of Transport's
Maritime Division were selling ship engineers' certificates to unqualified
people. The Transport and Civil Aviation minister has said that anyone implicated
in the scam will be sacked as it is a very serious matter endangering all
travelling by sea.
Vessel Ban
It has been said that PNG vessels may be banned from international ports
following on from the report of some ship engineers receiving certificates
even though they are not qualified for the job. The Australian Maritime Safety
Authority has called on its PNG equivalent to act fast on the matter to avoid
a ban. The parliamentary minister responsible has threatened anyone found
guilty of immediate dismissal from office.

Australian AID
Australia will soon send a foreign aid "flying squad" into financially
troubled PNG and other countries receiving aid to ensure its annual aid program
is not being abused by corrupt government officials. This bold approach, which
has been signed off by Australian federal cabinet recently, is bound to strain
the relationship Australia has with PNG. Australia give PNG about $AUD 330
million every year.
The move is to ensure that foreign aid from Australia is not used to prop
up corrupt governments and poor management in many of the region's smaller
island nations. This will test PNG's willingness to embrace new "quality
control" measures implemented by Australia. In the past five years, Australia
has given PNG more than $AUD 1.6 billion in aid. Up until now Australian has
adopted a "hands off" approach to aid.
The first step will be a visit by the Australian Foreign Affairs Minister
next month.
Salvation Army
The Salvation Army Appeal for funds is on track. The organization has raised
K17,000 so far towards its daily operations around the country. Donations
have been received from such major companies as Exxon Mobil, British American
Tobacco and the SP Brewery.
Ethnic Violence
The people of the Port Moresby Nine-Mile settlement have been told by police
to hand over the seven suspects involved in the recent ethnic related murders.
A similar warning has been sent to the parents and relatives of nine Goilalas
suspected of killing a Porebada mother recently. No suspects have been arrested
yet but the National Capital District Central Commander, Geoffery Vaki, has
said the whole area all the way to Brown River will be declared a fighting
zone.
Jax Photo Appeal
Scott Braiding, a former resident of Port Moresby has been approached by a
friend for pictures of Port Moresby Airport. If anyone can supply pictures of
the new Jackson's airport particularly airside snaps then please contact
this publication or simple email to photos[@]pnggossip.com and I will make sure
that they get to Scott for distribution to the right person.
Kerowagi Power
Over 8000 people in the rural areas of Kerowagi, Chimbu Province, will now
have access to electricity due to the rural electrification program. The governor
of Chimbu has handed over a cheque to PNG Power for K200,000.
Pornographic Case
A female police officer has been found guilty of producing pornographic photographs
in the 1980's before she became a police officer. The case has been adjourned
until the 19th of August when the court will hear submissions from the
accused's lawyer and prosecutors before deciding on a penalty.
Cancer Society
Chevron Texaco has donated K115,000 to the Cancer Relief Society. The donation
was in conjunction with the world wide Daffodil Day.
East New Britain
A senior civil servant in East New Britain has been caught receiving a package
containing three kilograms of marijuana at the Rabaul Post Office in Kokopo.
Post officials became suspicious when the parcel smelt funny and alerted police.
It is estimated that the three-kilogram parcel would be worth more than K200,000.
6th Nurses Symposium
The 6th Nurses Symposium was recently held in Goroka where over 200 people,
mostly nurses, participated. Gerard Saleu from the PNG Institute of Medical
Research said that nurses in PNG have developed an excellent relationship
as leaders in primary health care. These efforts by the nurses have paid off
with a drop in the infant mortality rate at the national level from 134 per
1,000 deaths in 1960 to 77 per 1,000 in 2000. The child mortality rate has
fallen from 79 per 1,000 in 1960 to 24 per 1,000 in 2000; the under five years
mortality has fallen from 213 per 1,000 in 1960 to 97 per 1,000 in 2000. The
life expectancy has improved from 40.6 years to 56.8 years in the same period,
an increase of 16.2 years.
Mount Hagen Billboards
Several huge billboards dedicated to beating corruption have been unveiled
in Mt Hagen. This is the start of a major awareness and education campaign
aimed at changing mindsets and attitudes in the province. The boards, standing
some five meters off the ground, all carry a single message in the form of
a question: "What is the role of a member of Parliament and councillors?"
And the answer: "To provide roads and bridges. To provide quality education.
To provide better health services. To make laws and maintain law and order."
This campaign will target the mismanagement of public funds.
Telikom - West New Britain
Telikom in West New Britain have had ,ore than K20,000 worth of telephone
repeater equipment stolen from a Telikom repeater site on Mt Dufaure in West
New Britain. Some of the items stolen were a portable generator, solar panels,
battery chargers, batteries and other associated equipment.
Goroka Hospital
The Goroka Base Hospital, in the Eastern Highlands province, will have to
scale down its operations following the breakdown of its steriliser recently.
There are no spare parts available to have the steriliser, made in 1971, repaired.
The hospital will be forced to cater for emergency cases only. The management
of Kundiawa Hospital, a two-hour drive away, has allowed Goroka the use of
its steriliser.
East New Britain Evictions
The much talked about eviction exercise in to begin East New Britain was
set to begin on the 25th of August. More than 200 eviction notices were to
be issued to the first lot of illegal settlers in the four districts of the
province. The illegal settlers will be given one month to pack and leave before
police and government officials start sweeping through the settlements on
the 25th of September.
Kododa Trail Fee
The Kododa Track Authority will, from the 1st of September, collect fees
from people walking the trail to help control the smuggling of drug, arms
and the illegal removal of war debris along the track in both the Central
and Oro provinces. The fees are K100 for international trekkers, national
trekkers, K50, overseas students, K50 and national students, K25.
University of PNG
After three years of using the trimester curriculum the University of Papua
New Guinea (UPNG) is set to revert to its old two-semester system next year.
The change will allow students more time to do academic based research enabling
them to gain necessary labour market skills . The students will still have
to score 96 credit points required to graduate with a degree after four years
of study. As a result of the change students could expect higher workloads
with more personal research as there will be no mid semester break.
Lae Roads
The Lae City Council has no funds to maintain the deteriorating roads in
the town. The roads have worsened due to the prolonged wet weather in the
town over recent months. The existing potholes in the city have developed
into huge craters making it difficult for motorists to navigate the road.
Criminals have taken advantage of this and early morning and late afternoon
travellers to the airport, at Nadzab, are being held up as they slow down
for the holes.
Class Action
A class action case against Rio Tinto in the USA is expected to be reopened
in September by a Californian court. The case was filed against Rio Tinto
by 20 Bougainvilleans in 2001 for claimed damages of billions of dollars environmental
damages by the Bougainville Copper Mine.
Port Moresby Ambulance
The St Johns Ambulance in Port Moresby has been forced off the road yet again
due to lack of funds. The sole ambulance service in Moresby has an uphill
battle receiving funds on time from the Department of Health under an agreement
signed in the early 1980's.
