News Items
Peter O'Connor
Peter O'Connor, a regular reader of and sometime contributor to this newsletter
collapsed and died on the 19th of August. All that knew Peter will miss him
greatly. He was like a brother, father and close friend to many Moresby residents
including his staff at ConXions and associated companies. Tentative funeral
arrangements have been made for Monday the 30th of August at St. Johns Anglican
Cathedral Church in downtown Port Moresby. A Church where he was a well respected
parish councillor.
Medical Symposium
The 2004 Medical Symposium is set to be held in September. A record number
of 66 papers on various health care developments will be presented at the
symposium. Medical practitioners and experts will present the papers from
various disciplines of medicine. The organisers have said that they expect
to raise K250,000 towards the event. They have received K190,000 from fundraising
activities and expect to raise about 60,000 from participants at the symposium.
AusAID has donated K11,900 towards the printing of the PNG medical Journal
in PNG after 49 years of having it printed overseas.
New Highlands Highway
A proposed new route for the Highlands Highway that will see the road going
through the Ungai range from Goroka to Chimbu has received K300,00 in funding.
The new route will bypass the Daulo Pass just outside Goroka that has been
prone to natural disasters especially during the wet season. The Eastern highlands
provincial government, Ungai Bena MP Benny Allan and Chuave MP David Anggo
have each donated K100,000 towards the construction. It is anticipated that
the K300,000 will attract K300,000 in counterpart funding.
Enhanced Co-operation Program
Police Commissioner Sam Inguba has assured PNG that he will have total charge
of all police personnel under the Enhanced Co-operation Package. The Package
will eventually see the deployment of more than 400 police from Australia
within the country. The first group are anticipated to arrive at the end of
the month or early next month. Some of this group will be deployed in Bougainville
and the rest will take up positions in Port Moresby. The aim of the package
is to strengthen the capacity of the Royal PNG Constabulary
in
terms of logistics, equipment and training.
AIDS Alert
The PNG Maritime Workers Industrial Union is worried that after six waterside
workers have already died from AIDS this year that more will succumb to the
disease before the end of the year. Waterside workers have been urged to do
whatever they could to address the problem.
Shipping
A young girl who has the qualifications as a Mate Class 3 and also has the
honour of being the first woman to qualify as an Officer of the Watch cannot
find a job in PNG because she has claimed that the ships do not have facilities
to accommodate a female crewmember. She has also said that she cannot get
a job that recognises her qualifications on international ships because PNG
is not a member of the International Transport Federation. Two shipping companies,
Consort Shipping and CCS Anville, have now offered to secure a job for her
after verifying her qualifications.
Governor General - Citizenship
The Governor General of PNG has been officially recognised as a citizen of
PNG. The event coincided with the launching of the childbirth program at the
Wardstrip Community School in Port Moresby. The Governor General, Sir Paulias
Matane, said he was unable to register at birth because he was born in the
jungle and the service was unavailable at the time of his birth. Nearly one
in every four people in Port Moresby has taken up the offer to register their
birth. He said that the nationality of someone could only be proven by a birth
certificate something that many people did not have including him until recently.
Quarantine Alerts
Several Quarantine alerts have been issued recently. Quarantine officers
have been put on alert to watch out for signs of a pig disease that has killed
thousands of pigs in Indonesia. The disease could wreak havoc on the pig industry
in {Ng and Australia. The World Health Organisation has warned PNG to look
out for bird influenza after an avian virus was discovered in Malaysia. The
disease was thought to be under control but has resurfaced. Malaysian authorities
have implemented measures in response to the outbreak.
Moresby Settlements
Wari Vele, a candidate in the forthcoming Moresby North East elections has
said that people living in the settlements are being treated as second-class
citizens. Mr. Vele said that the settlers are lacking basic services such
as water, power, sanitation, roads and streetlights. He also said that the
majority of the workers for Port Moresby live in the settlements yet the taxes
they pay are not funnelled back into the settlements where they live.
Highlands Fuel
The supply of fuel, into the highlands along the Highlands Highway, past
Goroka is still a major problem. The major fuel suppliers refuse to ship fuel
any further then Goroka due to the law and order problem and the condition
of the Highway. Aircraft operators are suffering because they now have to
carry more fuel into the high altitude towns and as a consequence carry less
passengers and cargo. This means that their ability to make money out of some
of the highlands sectors has decreased below acceptable margins especially
with the increase in fuel prices due to the increased price of a barrel of
raw oil. Road transport companies are also suffering.
PNG Steel
A PNG firm has been selected to supply steel to a development in Brisbane,
Australia. The contract to supply steel is seen as a milestone for a PNG company.
The contract, not very big in monetary terms, will hopefully lead to bigger
contracts in the future for NGI Steel based in Lae, Morobe province.

Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels
PNG wartime carriers and labourers may receive a medal to commemorate the
60th anniversary of the end of the war in the Pacific. The issue of a civilian
service medal is not a matter of compensation but rather a recognition of
the service they provided to the Australian Diggers during the Second World
War. The Australian New Guinea administration unit employed approximately
52,000 PNG civilians during the war against Japan. Over 5000 PNG nationals
served with the Australian Army during the war.
Hiri Festival
Twenty contestants have started preparations for the Hiri Hanenamo part of
the Hiri Moale Festival to be held in Port Moresby in September. The twenty
contestants are from Central Province and the National Capital District. The
festival will be held over the Independence weekend from the 16th to the 19th
of September at the Sir Hubert Murray stadium and Ela Beach. The festival,
this year, has attracted attention from other countries including Fiji, South
Korea and Australia. Dancers from Fiji will perform y=traditional dances and
put on display their arts and craft.
Computer Takeover
It has been rumoured that Daltron, whose owner left the country about four
months ago for Brisbane, Australia, is in the process of being sold to competitor
Datec. This would give Datec a virtual monopoly in the information technology
industry. It is feared that if the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission
(ICCC) approve such a move then many jobs will be lost due to the amalgamation.
Dated was a failed bidder for Telikom PNG so probably has plenty of money
to spend.
Olympic Stamps
Post PNG has immortalised swimmer Ryan Pini and weight lifter Dika Toua by
including them on two stamps Olympic stamps. Both Ryan and Dika qualified
on merit for the Olympics. Ryan appears on a 70 toea stamp and Dika is on
a K2.65 stamp. Other stamps in the series depict an Olympic pin from the Athens
1896 Olympics and the last stamp depicts an ancient Greek art featuring the
Olympic torch.
Olympic Update
Both Ryan Pini and Dika Toua have finished their competition in Athens. Both
athletes did very well in their respective sports.
Ryan managed to come 18th in the 100-metre butterfly event and Dika is now
considered number one in her class in the Commonwealth. Dika finished a credible
7th in the World in her event - the 53 Kilogram division of weightlifting.
PNG's female 100-metre sprint specialist, Mae Koime, set a new PNG 100 metre
record in her event. She had hoped to break the 12 second barrier but still
finished agonisingly close at 12 seconds flat a 0.12 second improvement on
her previous PNG record.
Mowen Boino, PNG's Olympic 400 metre hurdler has set a new PNG record of
50.97 seconds whilst competing in the Olympic games. He bettered his previous
Olympic best set at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia. This has meant that
PNG's four athletes have all broken national records making them the most
successful team to compete at the Olympics.
East Sepik Immunisation
Thanks to the World Health Organisation (WHO) more than 120,000 children
in the East Sepik province will be immunised over the next three months. It
is expected that over two million children will be fully immunised by the
end of the year in the whole of PNG under the WHO supplementary immunisation
activity implementation program. A mass measles immunisation program is currently
at 50 percent but the aim is to cover over 95 percent of the children in PNG.
The program has been implemented in Manus, New Ireland, East New Britain and
Morobe provinces.
RH Supermarket
Security guards hired to secure the premises robbed the RH supermarket in
Port Moresby. It has been alleged that five guards from a local security company
broke into the supermarket between 2am and 4am recently and stole electrical
goods and a substantial amount of money before carrying it away to their houses
using the security company vehicle. Four of the five have been arrested and
the fifth is still in hiding.
PNG Aviation
A plane operated by Airlink recently burst a tyre while about to take off
from Goroka airport but managed to stop safely 200 metres from the end of
the runway blocking it for several hours delaying other flights. It would
appear the two pilots on board did a textbook emergency stop. Unfortunately
this emergency stop basically grinds the remaining tyres and rims to pieces
but what is the price of some rubber and metal compared to the passengers
on board?
On a slightly different note it has been rumoured that only Air Niugini and
Airlink have Air Craft Operators certificates to operate in PNG. The other
airlines only have concessions from Civil Aviation to fly within the country.
Air Niugini, based on previous experience and expertise, is attempting to
get a concession to land at airports with faulty (inoperative) visual approach
guidance systems. Air Niugini has advised that it can demonstrate a consistent,
satisfactory level of safety during such outages.
Fare Increases
Once again it would appear that an increase on the existing fuel surcharge
is bound to happen in the very near future for people flying Air Niugini.
Other airlines around the world and in the region have already increased the
amount each passenger has to pay for the ever-increasing cost of a barrel
of oil. Air Niugini management have said that they prepared their annual budget
using a figure of USD23 per barrel. The actual price of oil is now over double
this budgeted figure.
More Jail Escapes
31 prisoners recently escaped from the Lakiemata Jail in West New Britain.
Attempts by the media to find out further information was thwarted because
no one was willing to comment on the escape. This included the police and
the Correctional Services.
