Operation Open Heart
Operation Open Heart has completed at the Port Moresby General Hospital
with 64 patients being operated on. This figure surpasses the previous
record of 53 operations achieved last year. The cost of the operations
has been valued at approximately K5 million if the same operations were
to be carried out in Australia. An operation for an individual is valued
at between K60,000 to K80,000 but can increase to K100,000 if there
are any complications.
Literacy Project
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) has launched the
"Partnerships for Civil Society Adult Education Initiatives"
project in PNG, which is jointly funded by the Government of the United
Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID) and the ADRA
office in the United Kingdom.

Free Flights
A mob of more than 50 men assumed that a plane that had brought a group
of highlands politicians to Enga province would take the mob back to
Moresby free of charge. The crew of the Airlines PNG plane were placed
in a life-threatening situation as the men rushed into the plane to
take a "free ride" to the big city. As is fairly typical for
a flight arriving at Wapenamanda Airport 1,000 of people met the flight
to greet their governor, who had just escaped being dismissed from office
for misconduct. Riot police had to use force to remove the people from
the plane. Over 40 of the mob had been arrested and will appear in the
Mt Hagen District Court.
Milne Bay Library
It has been announced that the Milne Bay Governor, Tim Neville, will
spend K100,000 of taxpayers' money this year to buy books for the Alotau
Public Library. A small team of Friends of the Library and funds from
Mr. Neville helped to renovate the Alotau library recently. He also
announced that the government would spend K3.5 million to build a new
public library for Alotau and the people of Milne Bay.
No Trespassing
Other countries have troubles keeping trespassers out but be warned
trespass in PNG and risk being shot. The shooting of an Indonesian trespassing
on PNG soil recently has caused uproar in Jakarta. Ten fishermen allegedly
fishing about 12 kilometres inside PNG waters tried to escape after
a joint police and Defence Force team fired a warning shot at them.
When they tried to escape the team fired them upon and one fisherman
lost his life and two others were wounded. The wounded men are recovering
at the Vanimo Hospital after being operated on to remove pellets from
their bodies.
The leader of the PNG Opposition, Mr. O'Neill and the Indonesian Government
has slammed the killing. Mr. O'Neill has called on the government to
conduct an investigation immediately to look into the shooting and inform
the appropriate authorities as to what actually happened.

UPNG - Vanimo
People in Sandaun province are now able to gain a direct entry into
University of PNG (UPNG) through distance education following the establishment
of an open learning centre in Vanimo. The University of Papua New Guinea
(UPNG) has set up the new centre and a memorandum of agreement has recently
been signed between UPNG and Don Bosco technical secondary school.
Medical School
Divine Word University in Madang has announced that they will be conducting
a medical degree from next year specifically designed to produce doctors
for the rural areas of the country. The degree program for "rural
doctors" will use Madang's Modilon Hospital as the training hospital.
The other degree programme run by the University of PNG is based in
the same vicinity as the Port Moresby General Hospital in the National
Capital.
Coffee Industry Threat
The K300 million per annum coffee industry is under threat from a past
called the coffee borer. The pest's scientific name is hypothenemus
hampei and it has been found within 50 kilometres of the PNG border
in the Indonesian province of Papua. The coffee borer is a serious pest
found in Africa, South America, Central America, South East Asian countries
and new Caledonia. The pest is following on the heels of potato blight
and the cocoa pod borer both recent introductions to PNG with dire consequences.

Ramu Project
A document paving the way for the Govt, a Chinese resource developer
(Metallurgical Construction Corp - MCC) and relevant joint venture partners
has been signed paving the way for the development of the Ramu nickel
project in Morobe province by the end of this year. The deal grants
MCC a 10-year tax holiday as incentive to kick-start the project.
Yonki Dam
Disgruntled landowners from Arona crippled the highlands and parts
of Momase recently by taking over the Yonki Dam and shutting down the
supply of hydro generated electricity. The landowners are claiming compensation
for destruction of their traditional land and villages. The matter is
the subject of an ongoing court battle between PNG Power and the landowners.
Parts of the Arona valley were flooded to create the Yonki dam in the
80's.

Trukai Rice
Trukai Industries have opened a K9 million upgraded rice packing and
blending mill. Over K4 million of that figure was paid to local PNG
suppliers and contractors. The upgraded facility will provide capacity
for other markets in the South Pacific and is equal in quality to that
in Australia. It will also allow for the processing of locally grown
rice if local suppliers can ramp up production to provide sufficient
quantities of rice.

Inadequate Food Supply
The Agriculture Minister, Sasa Zibe, has said that a rapidly increasing
population is a threat to the country's food supply. Food production
is growing at 2.1 percent per anum and the population is estimated to
be growing at 3.1 percent per anum. To increase production the Minister
said that poor infrastructure, law and order problems, land tenure systems,
trans-boundary pests and disease, poor extension services, lack of rural
credit and inadequate capacity building would all need to be overcome.

Police Commissioner, Sam Inguba, is being investigated over allegations
he blocked a police inquiry into an alleged fraud involved one point
four million US dollars.
