Telikom PNG Ltd CEO Peter Loko has announced that interconnection between Digicel and B-Mobile has been deferred to next Thursday, to give his company time to come up with an effective pricing structure for subsidiary B-Mobile.

Digicel

Digicel boss, Kevin O'Sullivan, has said that the PNG Government's NetCo-ServCo model as enshrined in the Information, Communication and Telecommunication (ICT) policy will not help competition. He said "I don't think - and I am not commenting on Telikom - that that model in general provide that impetus to create competition in any country". Mr O'Sullivan said this at the Institute of National Affairs and Asian Development Bank-organised public forum held recently in Port Moresby, while responding to queries whether that model was suitable for PNG.

Parliament

It has been claimed by senior staff members, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of their jobs, that Parliament is in chaos. The members also called for an independent audit of the books and investigations into the Parliament's accounts. The National Executive Council (NEC) is reported to have discussed the fate of Speaker Jeffery Nape as it was concerned about the running of Parliament. It agreed that he should be sidelined. The NEC however does not have the authority to sideline the Speaker.

Traffic Registry Scam

A computer, printer, camera and other equipment, believed to be used in the production of driving licences and issuing registration certificates for vehicles in Lae has been confiscated by the Morobe Administrator Mana-supe Zurenuoc and security officers at the Lae Traffic Registry. Two officers have been suspended pending an investigation into how the equipment was being used.

2008 Schools Fees

Education Secretary Dr Joseph Pagelio has announced this year's maximum school fees recommended by the National Education Board (NEB).

The NEB had recommended the following maximum fees per child this year

elementary prep to grade 2 - K90
grades 3 to 5 in the lower primary schools -- K150
grade six to eight in the upper primary schools - K230

At the secondary and vocational centres: grades seven to 10 - K750 for day students; K1100 for boarders; Grade 11 and 12 - K800 (day students) and K1300 for boarders and K80 per subject for students at the Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE).

It has been announced that students who cannot afford to pay the fees will be allowed to make payment in kind as an alternative to cash. This can include students working on school maintenance at weekends or during their holidays and parents providing labour or building materials or food for boarding students.

Cement Roads

Results from tests had proven that cement, although more expensive, was ideal for some of the roads around Lae and the money that was allocated for the road projects should be used to get the best work done at cost. Morobe Governor Luther Wenge said countries in Asia were using cement on their roads and there is no reason why this could not be done in PNG.

National Intelligence Organisation

Concerns have been expressed about the effectiveness of the National Intelligence Organisation. The organisation, under the Prime Minister and National Executive Council, has been said to be lagging in its security operations, especially in the field of illegal entry into the country and border security operations.

PNG Cricket

This was sent to me by a friend in Australia.

QUOTE
What a team, the PNG national under-19 cricketers about to head to Malaysia for the World Cup! But not all cricket fans are delighted. One family name crops up with the captain and two other players (two are brothers, the third is unrelated), plus the team manager and the chairman of selectors, all bearing the same surname and all but one from the same extended family. The highways and byways of Central Province are buzzing with debate.
END QUOTE

Well, lets see, the Amini family springs to mind when it comes to cricket in PNG but I hear that a junior member of a family in Brisbane is doing very well in the local cricket competition. Maybe it has something to do with the Amini bloodlines in that family as well? Well done Jordan!
