Remember that this mailing list is meant (mainly) for people who have an interest and already know a little bit about the people and geography of Papua New Guinea. The PNG Kina, which is mentioned from time to time in this newsletter, is currently worth around

but varies on a daily basis.

If you are really keen on finding out what the Kina is worth a currency converter for most world currencies can be located at -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/moni.html -- The PNG Business Directory also has daily rates based from a PNG perspective

Want to find out more about Papua New Guinea? Try searching at -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo -- and -- http://www.michie.net/png_faqs or try the PNG Business Directory located at -- http://www.pngbd.com -- and the PNG Tourism Directory -- http://www.pngtd.com. Both are excellent places to look for information about the country.
For those who are not so familiar with the geography of Papua New Guinea I suggest taking a look at -- http://maps.google.com -- and then clicking on the "+" to zoom in to the area of interest. Go to the following link for a quick start to a map of Port Moresby. -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/pom-map.html

Warning: PNG web sites seem to come and go. The fact of life is that it costs money to host a web site and there is not much return on the outlay to most businesses in PNG.

If you do click on a link and use the services or even have some comments to make then please contact the people at the relevant web site and let them know so they at least know that someone has gained some value from their efforts. If you are so inclined then mention that you heard about them from this web site. -- The PNG Gossip Newsletter.

Wara Kum Polluted

Traces of cyanide and mercury have been found in Wara Kum, the creek supplying water to Mt Hagen city in the Western Highlands province and its peripheries. Both chemicals are used in the mining of gold. The Kum provides water for more than 30,000 consumers in the Highlands capital.

Kumuls vs Batis

The PNG Kumuls have beaten the Fiji Batis 14 - 2 in Port Moresby. The Fijian score came via a penalty. As would be expected for Port Moresby a huge crowd watched the event.

Morobe Governor in Trouble

The governor of Morobe province, Luther Wenge, may face a vote of no-confidence from within his Morobe Provincial Assembly.

See -- http://www.postcourier.com.pg/20090803/news04.htm

Luther Wenge said he was prepared to defend the vote of no confidence move taken by a faction of Morobe Open Members from the Opposition led by former deputy governor Koni Iguan.

Indonesian Border Closed

Indonesia and PNG have agreed to keep the border closed. The border was closed after troubles at the Freeport mine in early July after the killing of Drew Grant from Australia.

Sepik River Crocodile Festival

The Sepik River Crocodile Festival is being held at Ambunti on the 11th and 12th of August. This year's event theme: "Kirapim wok bilong turis wantaim bus, wara na pasin tumbuna bilong Sepik" calls on everyone to recognize and promote ecotourism through the natural habitats and sustainable use of the river.

Mosquito Nets

Over 10,000 mosquito nets and anti-malaria tablets (diathaycarbomazine) have been distributed throughout the Nawaeb district of Morobe Province thanks to donors Global Fund. The nets were dispatched to the three local level government council areas in the district. (Wain Erap and the Labuta and Nabak local level governments).

The Global Fund is financing the distribution of over 88 million mosquito nets around the world. See -- http://www.theglobalfund.org/en/malaria/

Each year, malaria causes nearly one million deaths, mostly among children under 5 years of age, and an additional 189 to 327 million clinical cases, the majority of which occur in the world's poorest countries.

No Confidence?

The Melbourne Age newspaper has reported that a vote of no-confidence in the Somare led government is 'likely'. Opposition Leader Mekere Morauta said in a written statement that the National Alliance-led government was no longer fit to govern PNG. From 1981 to 1999 there were multiple successful and failed attempted votes of no-confidence until Morauta brought in reforms when he was PM that have ironically kept him from pushing for office this way.

Parliament Adjourned

Parliament was in an uproar when the Government sabotaged the Opposition's attempt to move a vote of no confidence against it by adjourning the sitting to the 10th of November. The Opposition will refer the matter to the court. Political scientists have expressed grave concern at the manner in which the Speaker and the Government handled the motion of no confidence and the adjournment of Parliament.

The Post Courier has reported that the Government released a total of K124 million and paid K2 million each to the 56 Members of Parliament who stood with it to adjourn Parliament from the District Support Improvement Program (DSIP) fund. It has been announced that Parliament House needs K60 million for a complete overhaul.
