Warning: PNG web sites seem to come and go. The fact of life is that it costs money to host a web site and there is not much return on the outlay to most businesses in PNG.

If you do click on a link and use the services or even have some comments to make then please contact the people at the relevant web site and let them know so they at least know that someone has gained some value from their efforts. If you are so inclined then mention that you heard about them from this web site. -- The PNG Gossip Newsletter.

Morobe Wants Independence

Luther Wenge, the Governor of Morobe province, is calling for independence from the rest of PNG. The leader of the People's Progress Party and New Ireland governor, Sir Julius Chan, says he supports Governor Wenge's call. Sir Julius says the continuous breaches and flouting of the constitution by the Somare lead government has eroded the confidence of the general population. He is calling on acting Prime Minister, Sam Abal, to work towards restoring the public trust in National government.

Mt Lamington

On the 21st of January 2011 it will be 60 years since Mount Lamington, in Oro (Northern) province, erupted after only giving an initial four to five days of unrest killing 3,000 people. An estimated 40,000 people would have to be evacuated if it erupted again, and most of the surrounding communities have no roads and little access to any form of communication. PNG does not have a good record at being ready. Manam Island erupted in 2004 with approx. 10,000 people being evacuated to the mainland. Six years later many of these people are still displaced.

The responsibility of monitoring activity of 16 active volcanoes across PNG is held by the Rabaul Vulcanological Observatory (RVO) on the island of New Britain home to several well known volcanoes such as Tavurvur, Ulawun and Pago but also Langila and Garbuna are on the island.

PNG, with about six million inhabitants, is situated on the Pacific Rim of Fire and highly prone to disaster yet is the country ready?

Neanderthal Link

New genetic information that appeared in Nature on the 23rd of December links the modern-day Melanesians of PNG with Neanderthals living in central Asia about 40,000 years ago. The presence of the ancient group's genes in modern-day humans suggests that the new group, christened "Denisovans" was once widespread throughout Asia.

The Denisovans are a previously unknown kind of human.

WikiLeaks and Julian Moti

Julian Moti, who fled PNG in the middle of the night in a PNG Defence Force Plane, has said the "WikiLeaks cable" documents have proved how notorious the USA and its pacific puppets are.

Read more in the article from the Solomon Star News -- http://giaman.com/pg/?22e9ad

Three years after the conclusion of the Defence Force Board of Inquiry (DFBoI) into the Moti Affair involving the clandestine flight of Moti to the Solomon Islands in 2006, the Defence Force and the State still owes over K1.8 million in payment for outstanding bills for amenities, including payments to the support staff of the inquiry.

Medecins Sans Frontieres

Two medical staff, a water and sanitation expert and a logistician from MSF (Medecins Sans Frontieres) have commenced a trip up the Fly River in Western Province to provide emergency care in areas that so far had received little or no cholera assistance. MSF (PNG) head of mission, Hernan del Valle, said "The response in Daru itself has been good, but many remote, rural areas with bad infrastructure and weak communication systems are not able to respond to the outbreak or report the number of people affected by the disease."

Nearly 3,000 cholera cases and over 300 deaths have been recorded in Western province since the outbreak was first reported in October this year.

Wara Bilong Life

Wara Bilong Life was a three-month Social Studies, Technology Education and Health online project which finished in December 2010. 18 classes in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea assisted with school health education for their peers in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. After researching about life for their peers in PNG, they designed a method of washing hands that required very little water with accompanying health education materials. Students were also encouraged to think about their own water usage. Academics and practising engineers gave the students feedback on their designs and health education materials. Do take a look at the solutions at -- http://www.megabright.co.nz/Wara_Bilong_Life/solutions.html
