Death Penalty
PNG Parliament has given a resounding aye to amendments to the Criminal Code Act to raise penalties for serious crimes including stealing and misappropriation. The death penalty will apply for crimes such as aggravated rape, sorcery-related killings and robbery with violence.
Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, said Parliament overwhelmingly endorsed the Government's package of new laws to deal with rising crime.

Death Penalty a Step Back
The United Nation's human rights office has criticised PNG for reviving the death penalty, saying it was a backwards step and would not deter crime in the poverty-stricken Pacific nation. PNG's parliament recently passed laws allowing execution by a range of methods, including hanging, electrocution, lethal injection, and firing squad.

William Kapris Reward
An award has been offered for the capture of William Kapris. Kapris has been on the run for almost two weeks since he broke out of the Bomana jail, near Port Moresby, with two other prisoners. Corrective Services Commissioner, Martin Balthasar, has announced a $US4,500 reward for any information that leads to Kapris' capture.

Air Niugini Anniversary
Bill Moore has clarified the costing arrangements for the 40th Anniversary ANG Reunion to be held in Queensland, Australia.
There has been some confusion over the Registration Fee. The Registration Fee was put in place to pay all the costs associated with organising a function of this size. It is not a deposit on the dinner/function which is quite separate.
Total cost per person is therefore:
Registration $10
Function/Dinner $75
Top 10 New Species
The top 10 new species list was announced recently by the International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University. The 2013 list included the smallest vertebrate on Earth - a tiny frog from PNG. The frog was discovered near Amau village.

Managing Director of the National Development Bank (NDB) Moses Liu says only about 10% of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) in Papua New Guinea are owned by locals.

Port Moresby Electricity
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the PNG Govt. have signed a project agreement to implement the Port Moresby Power Grid Development Project which will boost access to reliable electricity in PNG's largest urban centre, Port Moresby.

InterOil Board
InterOil Corporation has announced the nomination of Sir Wilson Kamit CBE for election to the Board of Directors. In addition, Isikeli Taureka will join InterOil as Executive Vice President of Corporate Development and Government Relations. Executive Vice President Christian Vinson, who has led InterOil's corporate development and PNG government relations efforts since the Company's inception, will retire in June.

Kayakers Conquer Chimbu River
It's third time lucky for four adventurers from New Zealand, who've been the first to kayak the treacherous canyons of a remote PNG River. The kayakers spent two years preparing for the 50km expedition along the Chimbu River in PNG's Simbu province.

Police Violence
Policemen have inflicted their own punishment on a group of people in Port Moresby. Reports say the group had not committed an offence and were returning to their settlement after police had earlier stopped them from confronting people at another camp when the group was then allegedly attacked by another squad of police armed with bush knives.

Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart's disappearance may no longer be a mystery. A team of researchers from The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) have discovered an anomaly in sonar images off a remote island in the central Pacific.
There have been claims previously that the plane had possibly been found in PNG.

Ramu Agri-Industries Sacks Workers
PNG agricultural company, Ramu Agri-Industries has sacked more than 250 oil palm workers over claims they staged an illegal strike for better wages and improved working conditions.

Grand Pacific Hotel

A three day conference addressing witchcraft and sorcery killings in Melanesia is underway at the Australian National University in Canberra.

Minister Loses Seat
The police minister and Madang MP, Nixon Duban, has been ousted from parliament following a successful court challenge to his election at the 2012 poll. Justice Gavara-Nanu said there was sufficient evidence and ordered the 2012 national elections for the Madang Open seat null and void.

Aussie Journalist Detained
An Australian journalist and a local fixer and cameraman were detained at the Manus Island asylum seekers processing centre, despite getting the approval of Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to visit the facility.

Daru Wharf
After being closed for almost six years the trestle wharf at Daru has been reopened. Work at the wharf took about three months to complete and cost more than K10 million. It was funded by the PNG Sustainable Development Programme, PNG Ports and Curtain Brothers.
