Airline Competition
The Flysolomons Sports & Rec Club are travelling to PNG to compete against Air Niugini teams. Fly Solomons will defend their title against Air Niugini. They are sending netball, touch rugby, darts and soccer teams.

Barge Overturned
All eleven crew members of the Mundi Navigator barge have been rescued by tug boat Go Rigel 80 nautical miles northwest of PNG's capital, Port Moresby. One person is reported to have sustained a non-life threatening injury.

New Airline Agreements
Solomon Islands and Fiji stand to benefit from a new Air Services agreement signed by Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The agreement will allow the utilisation of the Boeing 737 aircraft and travel from Nadi through Honiara, Moresby and then on to Bali.

Indonesia has signed an agreement on air transportation with Papua New Guinea. Through the agreement, Indonesia will open a direct flight route from Jakarta to Port Moresby. The Jakarta-Port Moresby route will be available twice a week.

Melanesian Spearhead Group
Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare has praised the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) as a "vibrant and successful" organisation when he appeared as a guest at a recent summit of the MSG. In his speech, Somare acknowledged "there is strong and growing support among the MSG peoples for West Papua's membership to MSG and West Papua's aspirations to self-determination."

A specialist with the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Dr Suman Majumdar has been reported as saying "one of the things that fuel TB everywhere is a weakened health system, poverty, vulnerable people and I think that is the driving factor".

New Chief Ombudsman
PNG has a new Chief Ombudsman. Former Public Service Commission chairman Rigo Lua, from Kapari village in Abau District, Central province, has taken over from Ombudsman Phoebe Sangetari who has being acting in the position for more than 12 months after the then Chief Ombudsman Chronox Manek died in 2011, after a long illness.

BSP Kerema
After more than four years banking services in Kerema, Gulf province, are to be restored. BSP closed its doors in 2008 after its branch in Kerema was subjected to a robbery where a substantial amount was stolen. Work on the new Rural Branch will commence later this month and expected to be completed before the end of 2013.

House Prices
The treasury department is considering a recommendation to regulate house prices in the country. Treasurer Don Polye says he has asked his department to examine a recommendation by PNG's Independent Consumer and Competition Commission to regulate the nation's housing market.

New Britain Palm Oil
Kulim in Malaysia is set to take over the remaining shares in New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL). The company already owns 50% of NBPOL. NBPOL is currently listed on the London Stock Exchange and the Port Moresby Stock Exchange.

Route to Jackson's Airport
An upgraded alternative route has been proposed to and from Jacksons International Airport. Morea Tobo Road between Six-Mile and the Airport will be upgraded to four lanes and other associated feeder roads will also be upgraded to allow for the free flow of traffic.

SEAir
South East Asian Airlines could be another airline to fly to PNG. If successful in its bid the airline said 720 seats would be used for the Clark to Port Moresby route and another 720 seats would be for Manila to Port Moresby. It plans to use Airbus A319 and A320 planes.

PNG Ports Stevedores Mess
PNG Ports has opened a new stevedore's mess. The initiative is part of PNGPCL's modernisation program to provide a safe and healthy environment for maritime workers especially stevedores to be served decent meals. Meals can also be purchased by other port users or PNGPCL staff at reasonable prices.

Biometric Identification
The Nasfund Contributors Savings and Loan Society (NCSL) has gone into a new age of savings in PNG by introducing biometric identification services for its members. The NCSL is a subsidiary of Nasfund and has more than 65,000 active members. NCSL in its drive for better service delivery to its members has introduced a self-service touch-screen system at its Boroko branch in Port Moresby.

ADB Chief Visits PNG
The Asian Development Bank president Takehiko Nakao will arrive in PNG on the 24th of June to visit project sites and discuss its assistance programme with government officials.

Komo Airfield
Komo airfield, part of the PNG liquefied natural gas project, has seen the first landing of an Antonov AH-124-100 aircraft. The airfield will provide a gateway for large equipment to be transported to the Hides gas conditioning plant that will treat the natural gas and condensate. The Antonov-124 cargo aircraft that made the airfield's maiden flight will now be used to deliver the large equipment required for the operation of the plant. About 70 trips in total will be required to transport the equipment.

AFLPNG QLD Championships
AFLPNG's under 14 Coca-Cola Binatangs have departed for the Gold Coast in Queensland to participate in the 2013 Queensland State Championships. The squad of 27 Young boys has been drawn from the Highlands (Goroka and Mt. Hagen), Islands (Kimbe/Hoskins and Kavieng), Northern (Lae and Kainantu) and Port Moresby. Selection was via the Coca-Cola National Championships held in November last year at Lae's Igam Barracks.

Malaysian Envoy Bids Farewell
The Malaysian High Commissioner to PNG, Datin Seri Blanche Olbery, has paid a farewell visit to Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio before leaving the country on the 29th of June.

Border Economic Zones
Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says that land issues along the PNG-Indonesian International Border will be seriously looked into and solved by the Border Economic Zones. Mr O'Neill made this undertaking after his return from a two-day State Visit to Indonesia with some of his Government Ministers, top bureaucrats, businessmen and women including members from Papua New guinea Chamber of Commerce and landowner companies involved in resource industries.

Lawyer Jailed for Contempt
A lawyer has been jailed for nine months for contempt of court in what might be the first case of its kind as attempts are made to clean up the legal system. Justice Derek Hartshorn who presided over the matter said: "A term of imprisonment will serve as a warning to others, especially lawyers, that court orders must be obeyed and that there are consequences for non-compliance."
