Rudd's Plan Will Fail
Elder statesman, Sir Michael Somare, has denounced Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's asylum-seeker deal, accusing Mr Rudd of using his country as a dumping ground for displaced people. Sir Michael said he also did not share Mr Rudd's and Mr O'Neill's confidence that the arrangement would stop the boats. "These people are desperate to get to Australia and to live the lifestyle Australia provides and I believe they will keep coming," he said.

Dispute Over PNG Payments
PNG and the Australian Government, led by Kevin Rudd, are at odds over what new infrastructure Australia will pay for as overseas aid under the controversial asylum-seeker deal. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has said Australia will pay for the upgrade of a highway into the port city of Lae and the construction of new law courts in the capital, Port Moresby. But Australia says it has agreed only to ''scoping studies'' into the work.

Asylum Centre Expansion
A major logistical effort was under way in Port Moresby yesterday to ship heavy equipment, tents and supplies to Manus Island in order to rapidly expand the Papua New Guinea detention centre.

Acting National Court Officials
Three acting National Court judges have been sworn-in for 12-month terms. They are Kewai Kawi-iu from Dermibat in Manus, Steven Oli from Irupara village in Rigo, Central, and Regett Marum, from Rabaul in East New Britain.

Police Mentoring

Hagen Hospital Upgrade
The Papua New Guinea government has committed more than 217 million US dollars over the next four years for the rebuilding of Mt Hagen General Hospital to a level six trauma specialist hospital.

PM's Charity Gala
Tina Arena, one of the Australia's most revered singers, has performed at the Prime Minister's Charity Gala held at the Dynasty Restaurant. The Gala was to celebrate the PM's first 12 months in office. K3.86 million was raised for charities in the country through the PM O'Neill Foundation.

Operation Open Heart Surgery
The annual Operation Open Heart (OOH) surgery program has commenced in Port Moresby. The OOH team hope to be able to complete 30 operations within a week.
OOH coordinator Professor Nakapi Tefuarani said the operation has gained the country's recognition in terms of the government's K2 million annual funding.

Operation Open Heart involves a team of medical and health specialists including surgeons, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, intensive care and operating theatre nurses and technicians who all donate their time, skills, expertise and money to travel from Australia to Papua New Guinea to join forces with their local counterparts to perform cardiac surgery on Papua New Guineans.

PNG and Solomons
Solomon Islands Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has highlighted the importance of building a strong private sector relationship between Solomon Islands and PNG. In a brief courtesy call to his office by the PNG trade minister Richard Maru yesterday, Mr Lilo said it is important for the Solomon Islands to look to its Melanesian brothers like PNG to increase the dimension of trade.

Alotau Port
According to the PNG Ports Corporation Ltd (PNGPCL) work on the K45 million Alotau Port development is progressing well and should be completed on time for the first cruise liner expected to berth in November. The development project is supported by the Milne Bay provincial government and Governor Titus Philemon. The Milne Bay provincial government is spending K3 million as counterpart funding for the project being undertaken by the National Fisheries Authority.
Australian Chief Visits PNG
The Australian Chief of the Defence Force (CDF), General David Hurley, AC, DSC, and his wife Mrs Linda Hurley have visited PNG from 1 to 3 August in support of the enduring PNG-Australia defence partnership. This was General Hurley's inaugural visit to PNG as CDF, and he took time to meet with PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) troops in Port Moresby and Wewak.

Companies Scent Offshore Gold
Western Australia-based Decmil, a company previously little known outside the mining industry, has picked up a government deal worth at least $150 million to build quarters on Manus Island for an initial 600 asylum seekers and another 200 staff at a permanent site, away from the naval base where the present tent city sits.

Missing IMR Researchers
It has been over two years since Gibson Gideon, Tania Oakiva, Lydia Petrus, Leonard Vavana and George Dogoya from the PNG Institute of Medical Research went missing in the waters of West New Britain. The government may have forgotten these five but their memory lives on in the hearts of family, friends and co-workers.
Eagle Boys Pizza
Eagle Boys has partnered with Port Moresby based retail company CPL Group to bring the brand to PNG. The pizza franchise's first store is located in the Port Moresby suburb of Central Waigani, and a second is set to open outside CPL Group's Stop and Shop supermarket in the city centre at the end of August.
