Kina Depreciates
The Bank of Papua New Guinea's quarterly economic bulletin released last week said the kina depreciated against most major currencies, except the Australian dollar which it appreciated by 3 per cent as a result of Australian dollar weakening against US dollar. The bank said the depreciation against these currencies was mainly due to the combined effect of high domestic import demand and lower foreign exchange inflows.

Youth Unemployment
Unsurprisingly a youth unemployment survey conducted in six urban areas has discovered that there is a large number of unemployed youth in cities and towns. Out of a total of 318 respondents, 44 per cent arrived in towns and cities in search for a job while 33 per cent migrated for study. More than half of the respondents were primary and secondary school drop outs and just over 10 per cent had tertiary qualifications. Interestingly, only 32 per cent of the youth in the survey were employed while 68 had no formal jobs.

Tourism Doldrums
The recent attack on a group of Australian trekkers in Papua New Guinea sent ripples of fear through the country's tourism industry. The story received massive media attention here in Australia, which is PNG's main tourism market. Papua New Guineans say the Australian media's focus on the bad things about the country is unfair, but bad publicity isn't the tourism industry's only problem.

Progress in Paradise
With resources dwindling around the world, Papua New Guinea is a tempting location for would-be explorers. But getting the most out of the country is difficult. The country's mineral deposits are extensive, and include gold, nickel, silver and copper. It also has large amounts of oil and natural gas. But none of these resources are easy to reach, and the country has poor infrastructure which slows down any work there.
