Madang Market

The Japanese Government has approved a grant to rehabilitate the Madang town market. The co-funded project by the Japan Agency and National Fisheries Authority will cost a total of K31 million and take up to two years to complete.

Spying Scandal

After the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby was named as one of many clandestine surveillance sites being used by Australian spies to intercept phone calls and monitor online activities within PNG and across Asia Pacific Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said friends are not supposed to spy on each other.

Black Cat Chargers

Police have charged two brothers implicated in the Black Cat Track killings last month in Morobe. Provincial police commander Leo Lamei said the two had surrendered to community leaders and were picked up at Wapali village between Wau and Salamaua. This has brought the total of number of suspects captured to eight.

PNG Fisheries

A wave of new fish processing facilities is galvanising downstream activity across Papua New Guinea (PNG), paving the way for the $408m fisheries sector to transform itself into a billion-dollar industry.

PNG's 3.1m-sq-km fishing zone is the second-largest in the South Pacific, yielding up to 20% of the global annual tuna catch. However, until recently, the country was losing an estimated two-thirds of its potential downstream and value-added business due to a lack of domestic processing facilities.

PNG Kumul Coaching director has penned an apology letter to the nation after the recent one point loss to France at the World Rugby League Cup. Meninga wrote: "Remember this please, this side is the youngest side in the competition, the least experienced, the least representation from NRL or English Super League. Your National Team is competitive now. Imagine how good Team Kumul will become if we keep persevering with our long-term plan. Patience is our greatest virtue. Patience and courage conquers all things."

Reykjavik Geothermal

Icelandic company Reykjavik Geothermal has recently signed a consulting agreement with the PNG government. For the past three years, the company has researched the country and this experience will prove helpful in the work to be done now on behalf of the government, so David Stefansson, head of the consulting group of the company. The company will be working on a master plan for geothermal energy utilization in the country.

Soldiers Leave for NZ

Forty-five soldiers from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force have left for New Zealand to take part in the largest international training exercise to be held in that country.

The 40th Anniversary Reunion of Air Niugini Staff has been held in Queensland. In early December a collection of photographs taken at the reunion will be uploaded to our web site. AAP Office Closure

A Pacific media expert says the closure of the Australian Associated Press, or AAP, bureau in PNG may result in more parachute journalism and less informed stories on the region. The AAP says it had no choice because Australian newspapers and magazines weren't running the bulk of the stories its local correspondent provided, meaning the bureau was running at a significant loss.

PNG Chancery in Solomon Islands

The PNG Post Courier newspaper recently reported that the controversial building project will eventually cost PNG taxpayers USD$15 million.

The Solomon Islands Joint Civil Society Groups and Concerned Citizens (JCSG & CC) is calling on Solomon Islands Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo to inform the nation what his government has done or will do about the PNG Chancery building project in Honiara.
