BSP Tennis Programme
BSP, PNG's largest Bank, has recommenced the BSP Regional Tennis for Schools Programme that proved to be such a resounding success all around PNG with thousands of school children and their teachers last year. Last year over 12,000 students and teachers took part in the BSP Tennis Programme.

The Bank of Papua New Guinea has adopted the Misys Opics Plus v3.0, Misys Opics Risk Plus and Misys Eagleye systems. The solutions will deliver enhanced efficiency and visibility in its reserves management operation and increased automation and management control of credit, market and operational risks.
The integrated front-to-back system will provide for easier reconciliation and regulatory reporting. New Anglican Archbishop
The provincial council of the Anglican Church of PNG (ACPNG) has elected the Rt. Rev. Joseph Kopapa, bishop of Popondota diocese, as its new archbishop and primate. Kopapa, who comes from Tufi District in Oro province, succeeds the former primate, James Ayong, who retired in 2009. He is the fifth Archbishop since the Church's independence from the Province of Australia.
The ACPNG has five (5) Diocese and the Bishops from these Dioceses who are also members of the House of Bishops of the Province of PNG are eligible for election.
School Fight
A fight at the Fr Peter (Fatima) Secondary School in Banz, Western Highlands has seen at least 40 students sustaining injuries. The fight broke out early one morning between the Western Highlands and Jiwaka students over a stolen mobile phone.

PNG Sailors
In PNG, they learned to navigate by the stars. But after six weeks in Australia learning to handle commercial vessels, 12 young men from Papua New Guinea can also steer by GPS, if need be.
The men are in Australia to obtain their coxswain's ticket to work on motor vessels, in a program sponsored by their local MP, Francis Marus.

Milne Bay Pageant
A Southern Highlands girl has entered the annual Miss Milne Bay pageant. It is believed this is the first time an entrant has come from outside the province. Merlyne Kipa, 20, is from Kagua in the Southern Highlands and she is being backed by the New Guinea community in the province.
Labour Ward Renovated
The renovations at the Port Moresby General Hospital labour ward have been completed and the mothers to be are happy with the cleanliness and comfort of the ward.

New Political Party
Powes Parkop, the governor of the National Capital District, has launched a new political party called the Social Democratic Party. Mr Parkop, a long time human rights activist, went into Parliament in 2007 as an independent, but says he had always realised that to get things done he would need to work within a party, and this has spurred him to form one.
Pilot Wins Award
An Air Niugini student pilot has won the Sir Donald Anderson Trophy for female pilots in Australia. 21-year-old cadet first officer Rhoda Jane Ilave, who recently graduated from Air Niugini's cadet training course for pilots and engineers won the trophy, sponsored by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority. It is awarded annually to three women pilots with the highest aviation exam results over the past year. Air Niugini chief executive officer, Wasantha Kumarasiri, said yesterday Ilave's achievement was not just for Air Niugini but also for PNG.
The award commemorates a man who made a distinguished contribution to Australian aviation after World War II, holding the position of Director-General of Civil Aviation for almost 17 years.

Kagasten Building Burnt
A landmark of Madang town, the Kagasten Building, burnt to the ground recently despite the efforts of firemen and 20 student seamen from the PNG Maritime College. The fire-fighters managed to save adjoining buildings including the two-storey Papindo shopping complex.

Fight at Lihir
One man is dead and three houses have been torched on Lihir Island, New Ireland province, following a clash between Sepik settlers and Tabar Islanders. According to reports, a man from Tanga was suspected of killing a Sepik man resulting in the Sepik people in the vicinity of the Lihir Gold mine burning down three houses belonging to the Tanga people.

New NZ High Commissioner
Marion Crawshaw is the new New Zealand High Commissioner to PNG. Cramshaw recently presented her letter of introduction to the Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare. Crawshaw is a career diplomat who has previously been posted as deputy high commissioner to the Solomon Islands, deputy representative to the OECD in Paris, as well as to Suva and Rome.
Plane Skids Off Kikori Strip
It has been reported that a Twin Otter (P2-EMO) rumoured to be owned by owned by Airlines PNG and on lease to Star Mountains skidded off the runway while attempting to take off from the Kikori airstrip. Fortunately the plane was stopped by a mound of earth otherwise it would have plunged into a ravine at the end of the strip.
Kikori lies in the delta of the Kikori River at the head of the Gulf of Papua in Gulf province.

Jiwaka Roads
The Works, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister, Don Polye, has announced funding of K20 million for infrastructure development in the newly declared Jiwaka province. Polye announced the funding for two roads into Jimi and renovation of all existing airstrips in Jiwaka.
