Tiensten Penalty

The penalty for Pomio MP and former Planning Minister Paul Tiensten has been deferred to January next year. Tientsen, who was found guilty of dishonestly approving a K10 million (US$4 million) to a controversial Airline company owned by Kokopo businessman Eremas Wartoto, will appear before the court on the 28th of January to hear his submission on a penalty.

Parliament Vandalism

Parliament contractors have chopped off the top of an intricately carved totem pole to begin its dismantling in defiance of a personal intervention by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill. The country's founding PM Sir Michael Somare Thursday called on Speaker Theo Zurenuoc to resign for destroying Papua New Guinean culture and vowed to get a court order to restrain him from causing further damage until Parliament returns in 2014.

PNG Looking for Pinoy Teachers

PNG's Department of Education urgently need teachers and lecturers and is considering Filipinos to fill in the jobs, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said recently. Baldoz said qualified teachers may earn from PNG Kina 52,759 to PNG Kina 47,489, or the equivalent of P844,144 to P758,224 per year.

Air safety authorities in PNG have released a preliminary report into a plane crash that killed an Australian trainee pilot last month.

Drug Mule Charged

Police have busted a Nigerian scam that involved drugs from PNG and actual Nigerians living in Auckland and Manawatu. They are warning of the dangers of being sucked in by scams after a 68-year-old victim was arrested after being recruited to allegedly smuggle 1.5kg of methamphetamine from Port Moresby.

National Financial Inclusion Strategy

Treasurer Don Polye has launched the National Financial Inclusion and Financial Literacy Strategy 2014-2015 at the annual Financial Inclusion Expo organized by the Bank of PNG on the 5th of December, 2013. Treasure Don Polye, who was recently elected as Chairman of Board of Governors of the IMF and the World Bank, acknowledged His Excellency Martin Dihm, the European Union Ambassador to PNG and Minister Stuart Schaefer of the Australian Government's Department of Development Cooperation in PNG, for their funding support to the Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme (PFIP) - a joint programme of the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and partner to Bank of PNG for the development of the country's 1st National Strategy on Financial Inclusion.

Solar Powered Recharge

According to ABC's Pacific Beat -- http://giaman.com/pg/?583bc8, -- a pilot project of 30 mobile phone recharging stations has been launched at Hula, situated around 3 hours away from PNG's capital, Port Moresby. The stations are very simple units, consisting of a single solar panel and a box containing batteries. Up to 20 phones will be able to be charged simultaneously. The units will also incorporate an LED light for night-time security. The stations will be operated and maintained by locals as a small business venture and users will pay a small fee to recharge their phones.

Aussie Military Heritage

Australian Prime Minister must build military heritage legacy closer to home. A commemorative centre alongside the Bomana Commonwealth War Cemetery just outside of Port Moresby, for instance, may be a suitable place to build a legacy and to reinforce the ties with our kin in Papua New Guinea.

Corruption Agreement

Australian Federal Police and PNG's top corruption fighting body have signed an agreement to work together to bring corrupt officials to justice. The head of Taskforce Sweep, Sam Koim, says corruption will be the main focus and intelligence information, the main tool.
